Dear Friends,
The following news will come as no surprise to most of you who have read this blog. For generations the Presbyterian Church and its member denominations have grappled over belief. Belief in Jesus as the singular, saving, Lord of all. Belief in the Trinity. Belief in the Bible as God's infallible Word. Belief in miracles. ETC. I have spent over 10 years grappling with these issues as an inquirer, candidate, and 7 of those years as an ordained clergy. Grappling, fighting, disagreeing over the most basic matters of the faith. Nearly 2 years ago I attended my 2nd GA as an observer and it became clear to me that we were spiritually matched in a deathgrip. I for one felt called of God to let go and yesterday the congregation I serve by a unanimous vote agreed.
To my friends still in the PCUSA - please understand that the door of escape is closing if you must stay then please do so in full awareness that you will face loss of goods and kindred if you wait - a worthwhile choice if you must make it. To my friends in the NWEPC - see you soon! Thanks for the safe harbor and the blessing of good fellowship already extended.
Statement:
The First Presbyterian Church of Thibodaux at its duly called congregational meeting on May 4th, 2008 voted unanimously to disaffiliate from the Presbyterian Church (USA) and voluntarily affiliate with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Of its 91 voting members 47 were present and all voted in the affirmative to disaffiliate and all voted in the affirmative to seek admission into the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
It is with great expectation that we announce what we consider this to be our return to our roots in orthodox Christian practice by joining our sister churches in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC). Already one of the congregations we had the honor of planting many years ago (First Presbyterian Church of Houma) is a member of the EPC with them and others we are taking a firm stand for the Essential Tenets of the Christian Faith as articulated in the EPC Constitution.
For decades we have watched with alarm as the PC (USA) has drifted from its roots and its clear proclamation of Jesus Christ as Lord. We do not perceive this so much as our leaving the denomination as our recognition that it left us. With that realization came a desire to return to our long lost family in the EPC. As a Christian Church in the Reformed tradition we hold dear to the teachings of the Bible and its call upon our lives (see the possition papers section). In this action we choose to remain Presbyterian in our polity (church governance) and Biblical in our beliefs while affirming that actions as well as words matter.
This moment is made bittersweet by the many friends that we leave behind in the PC(USA) but we know that we must follow Jesus above all other relationships. We also live in the hope that our friends will realize that we have not changed; merely our institutional affiliation has changed. We will continue to pray for the PC(USA) but it is time for us to move forward with joy and expectation into our new life in Christ.
Matthew 10:38-39 38 and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

May God go with all of you Bill. Our prayers are with you although I for one am sad to see you go.
Bill,
Thank you for your faithfulness to God's word and His call on your life and the life of your congregation. We will continue to pray for you and your congregation. I look forward to hearing about the exciting things that the Lord has for you to do and the ways in which He will use you to build the Kingdom! God is so good!
Rick Strode
For some, it is sad to see you go, but for others it is good to see you come over. Welcome Bill and FPC Thibodaux!
(from a Kirk of the Hills member)
And, on behalf of the New Wineskins Presbytery, "Welcome."
As you so aptly observed in your post, you are not leaving the Church. You are simply answering God's command that your flock move to another part of His one great pasture.
Mac
Huzzah! Great news! Welcome to the brothers and sisters of Thibodaux!
What Viola said.
So I guess your statement that the lawsuit was only about property rights was a lie?
Mark,
Let he without sin cast the first stone.
Judge not lest you be judged as you judge.
The property suit was just that a property suit. The clear and free title of the church was a stewardship matter.
Now after 4 months of study and conversation with the presbytery the Synod of the Sun has suspended the process - not me, nor my congregation.
I will gladly extend forgiveness if the apology is granted otherwise God will be the judge between you and I.
May God Bless You and Your Parish Bayou.
You and your congregation are in my prayers at this time of transition.

Well you beat us out. We're in the process and after Sunday's meeting with the resolution team it may not be till November but we'll be there. God bless you and probably see you in Baton Rouge as well as Grand Isle.
Alan
Friends thank you all for your kind words.
Making it through the day with only one personal attack is pretty good.
It really is an opportunity for me to practice letting go.
Alan - I think it is a bummer that you have to wait that long - in fact I think it is unjust - but you do well to stay calm.
God bless you all and the many others who have been in touch today. It reminds me that we walk by faith (in fellowship).
Bill,
Godspeed my friend. I sincerely mean this, I applaud you. You made it through all the rapids and kept your congregation and ministry intact.
We should serve where we can do the most good.
Blessings,
John
John,
Hah, how to react to that one?!
Peace on earth goodwill towards men.
Well I guess I won't have John Shuck to kick around anymore. LOL!
Thanks for the complement I truly appreciate it - but in all seriousness - don't applaud me give all Glory to God for he is good, gracious, and worthy.
Peace to you.
May your tribe increase now that your full energy can be given to the good news!
May the Lord bless you and your congregation as you continue to follow His lead.
Bill,
I pray God will be be with you and your congregation most powerfully in the days ahead. Sometimes, we have to do that right thing the Holy Spirit is leading us to do even if it is hard.
Always remember that the most vocal and outspoken enemies of Jesus were the religious leaders. They placed their emphasis on rules and regulations rather than relationship with God.
I wonder how many critics who say churches who disaffiliate should walk away from what they have bought and paid for would be willing to allow their homeowners association or mortgage company to have their homes??? Ask your opposition if they would just give in and allow someone else to claim their property.
When Kirk of the Hills withdrew from the PCUSA, there was a lot of hostility expressed toward us. Some felt like we had committed the "unpardonable sin" by daring to leave.
The said truth is that the PCUSA leadership knows that without the threat of the "Property Trust Clause" there would be a mass exodus of churches. It is being used as a hostage technique.
You and your congregation will be in my prayers. Let me refer 2 Scripture passages to you that have been a source of strength to me as well as an assurance that we at the Kirk did the right thing in separating from the PCUSA.
The first passage is in Joshua 24 where the elderly leader gives the people a faith history and warns them about forsaking the Lord to serve other gods. Joshua tells the people that they have to make a choice and be true to that choice. The other passage is from 2 Chronicles 13. (History is always a great teacher.) Abijah warns Jeroboam about the consequences of forsaking the Lord and resisting the kingdom of God. Jereboam and his men were defeated, and the men of Judah were victorious because they relied on the Lord. The battle belongs to the Lord and those who stand with Him!
Bill, continue to be faithful--no matter what! First and foremost you belong to the Lord your God--not a denomination. Jesus is your Savior and the Lord of your life--not the PCUSA, the Synod of the Sun, or the presbytery!
May God's grace, peace, mercy, and love be with you and those in your congregation in the days ahead,
Peggy A. Alexander
Kirk of the Hills
Congratulations! You and your congregation have made the perilous journey and reached a safe shore.
Peace and blessings be with you & Julia in this new vista of your ministry! Jim
The PC(USA) just got a bit smaller and lonelier with FPC Thibodaux's departure. Yet, press on, mes amis.
Thanks again friends - old, new, dgital, in Christ!
I was sharing with my wife last night that it is such an incredible blessing to hear from friends across the country and to have people searching God's word and sharing from it.
I am truly blessed and eager for the future!
